3 Reasons Why You Need a Workout Partner

At Portland TEAM Fitness, we understand the importance of the group dynamic…in fact it is the essence of our brand. Portland TEAM Fitness was created specifically so people could come together, feed off of each others energy, and do more inside and outside of the gym than they ever thought possible with their lives. So, whether you know it or not, you are already experiencing the benefits of a workout partner, BUT here are a few more, as well as a sample video you and a friend can do in the park! Happy Sweating!
Accountability: The alarm goes off…it is 5:00am on a dark, cold winter morning. Most normal people aren’t going to get out of bed for another two hours. You consider, and re-consider being one of those “normal people” with a few extra taps of your snooze button. HOWEVER, before snooze #4 you know your training buddy will be at your door in less than 20 minutes, so you get your butt out of bed, and lace up your sneakers. YOU GET UP. Having a specific person to meet, such as a trainer, a class, but most specifically a partner in which you literally go do the same thing with (travel to class together, run together, etc etc) is one of the best things you can do to ensure that no matter what, you will get your workout in. On long days when you want to keep working, or just have that last e-mail to send, if you have made plans with a workout partner, you will go do them. According to Men’s Health, we are much less likely to cancel on a friend, than we are on our own solo plans! Accountability leads to more fitness, which leads to achievement of goals.
Motivation: Another great reason to have someone to share the sweat, burpees, squats and lunges with is that you will actually push just a bit harder than if you were working out solo. According to a small study on breakingmuscle.com it was noted that participants biked twice as long when engaged with another person, than when they were alone. This is only a small example of how working with someone else can motivate and inspire you to try a little bit harder, go that extra mile, or push a little, AND if you are doing that in most of your workouts verses slacking off, the results that you are looking for will appear that much quicker! On the days where you are lacking that second gear, or simply “not feeling it” a training partner can help you snap out of it, whether you think it is possible or not! It is also nice to have a person to connect with post workout too, to help you stay motivated to make healthful nutrition choices.
Partner Workouts are MORE FUN! Adding a social element to fitness really just makes things more fun. Meeting a friend for a workout is a GREAT way to connect, catch up, while doing something great for your bodies. It is an excellent way to de-stress after a long day, to have someone there listening as you sprint, climb, bike, or cross train. After working out with a friend with a trainer, at a group class, or on your own in the outdoors, most people leave with a smile on their face, and a great sense of pride, accomplishment and increased confidence. Not a bad way to end (or start) your day!
Portland TEAM FItness Partner in the Park Workout: Try this! Can you get through 3 rounds of these exercises? Go for it! Extend this workout by adding a run before or after, or 5minutes of jogging in between each of the 7 pairs of exercises.
