A delicious combination of sweet and tart, cherry limeade says summer, but more often than not, it’s loaded with sugar, corn syrup, or any number of other undesirable ingredients. The good news is, it’s not that difficult to make cherry limeade at home with fresh, whole ingredients! Cherries themselves come with a whole host of health benefits. A good source of fiber, melatonin, and antioxidants, cherries are also purported to reduce inflammation and ease the pain associated with conditions like arthritis.
¾ pound cherries (about 3 cups), pitted
½ cup sugar
1/3 cup lime juice
1 teaspoon lime zest
Put 1/2 pound of the cherries, sugar, and 3/4 cup of water into a medium pot; cover and simmer until cherries are tender and have a syrupy consistency, about 15 minutes.
Set aside. When cool, purée in a blender with lime juice and zest.
To make each glass of limeade, pour about 1/2 cup of the cherry-lime syrup and 3/4 cup club soda (or sparkling water) over ice.
Feel free to adjust proportions to suit your tastes- more lime or less sugar for instance. You can even mix in a bit of your favorite adult beverage!
