How long have you been exercising at Portland Team Fitness?
Since before the beginning. I started at Nike training with Alayne for a couple of years, then when she left to open her own gym, I found I had to follow her to PTF to get the work outs I wanted.
What made you get started?
A small advertisement on the Nike Intranet for a small group training class called “Wonder Woman.”
Do you remember your first class? Can you share that story and what it was like?
Not sure if I remember the specifics.
Why did you come back?
Because the classes were different every time I attended, it elevated my fitness for soccer, and the group was small so Alayne was able to focus on technique.
Why do you keep coming back to PTF?
It’s pretty simple. The people and the fitness. Not only are the trainers really good and knowledgeable, the people I was working out with are inspiring in all of their own ways. It’s not just what everyone is doing inside the gym together, but what you know they do outside the gym as well.
When did it “click” for you? When did fitness become habit you couldn’t live without?
I’ve always had fitness saturated in my blood. But I think it really started when I was about 30 years old, when I decided to make my wellness a priority.
What are your biggest achievements? Weight Loss? Inches lost? Races completed? Big competitions? Increase in speed, agility or athletic performance? Personal best achievements? Please be as specific as possible.
Biggest Acheivements-Playing soccer for 38 years, still competitive and traveling to tournaments in US. Competed in the World Masters Games in Italy in women’s soccer for the USA. I scored the first goal of the tournament from defense. We earned a bronze medal. Back Packing through the wildernees like the Enchantments in Leavenworth, WA and Havasupi Canyon near the Grand Canyon just to name a couple. Summiting Mt. St. Helens 3 times. Competing in the Open for Cross Fit, only because I thought I was going to end up in the hospital after tossed 150 9ft 14lb wall balls in 12 minutes. But my biggest achievement was recovering from an ACL surgery, and coming back quicker and stronger than I was before I tore it. It took two years to build back my speed, agility and strength.
How do you feel different since you have been working out at Portland Team Fitness?
I feel leaner and more power.
What are the positive benefits of coming to Portland Team Fitness?
The most positive benefit of PTF is the variety of exercises that each class offers. It’s never exactly the same, so its impossible to get bored. And I don’t think these classes could be designed in such a effective motivating manner if it wasn’t for the expertise of the trainers.
What is your favorite exercise?
Which is your favorite exercise that you actually don’t like?
Probably burpees because they are so effective for over all fitness.
What would you tell someone that is just beginning on their fitness journey? WHY should they chose PTF? Take it slow, listen to your trainer and stay committed. They should choose PTF because the trainers and the people you are working out with motivate you to make the work outs about you. You are encouraged to go at your strength building pace, yet maintaining the challenge. This ensures results and commitment.
What has been one of the most influential steps or changes you have made in your overall lifestyle that has helped you meet your goals? One of my most recent findings over the past year, is I don’t have to go guts out on everything. I don’t need to play in 5 soccer games a week, 2 is fine and probably more so effective rather than the 5. Second is to sleep. Get those 8 hours per night. The rest is just as important at the exercise.
What is something that you have done recently that you NEVER thought you could have done?
Losing weight over the holidays! Haha! The only tactic I used was “always make the better choice.” I lost 9 pounds from Oct. 1 to Jan. 1< just by following this.
What is something you are training for or looking forward to in the near future?
Soccer tournament is Las Vegas in April. It’s the most competitive womens tournament in the country.
THANK YOU! Any last words? If you could pick one piece of exercise equipment AND only one song to sweat to on a deserted island, what would they be and WHY? I would choose the kettle bell, as so many exercises can be done with this and it works your core. For a song right now, “Work Bitch” Britney Spears.
